Beyond "Nothing"

Do you have children who respond to every personal question with "Fine," "I don’t know" or "Nothing." Here’s some help to get them talking.

  • Ask open-ended questions instead of questions that can be answered with a "Yes" or "No."
  • Ask questions when conversations naturally occur such as driving in a car or doing chores together.
  • Talk about your experiences to open up a discussion.
  • Don’t judge and make a conversation seem like an interrogation. Be careful of questions that begin "Why are you always so...?" or "Why don't you ever ...?"

Are You Middle-Aged?

Middle-aged is no longer defined by
how old you are. Instead, it reflects a period in life where behaviors have changed. Here are some signs that psychologists say defines you as middle-aged. Our advice: it just doesn’t matter.

  • The kids have moved out.
  • You don’t recognize the names of popular music groups anymore.
  • You worry about having enough money to pay for health care.
  • It takes a day or two to recover from strenuous exercise.
  • You think more about the past than the future.
  • At least one parent has died.
