Touch it. Learn it.

Are you a person who needs to move and physically interact in order to understand something? Do your hands automatically reach out and touch things? You may be what experts call a kinesthetic learner. People who are kinesthetic learners gather information by doing. Thye need to be active participants in the learning process, physically involved and engaged. They are the touchy-feely folks who communicate by hugging or sitting close. If you are a kinesthetic learner you need to keep active to stay involved. Instead of reading about architecture, you need to build. Instead of listening to a piano piece, you must put your hands on a keyboard. Itís great. Just reach out and feel the whole world around you.

Traveling Smart

Here are some car games that not only will keep kids entertained but also help with basic learning skills. Even more important, they will connect people in the car (not like hand-held electronic games!)

Color My World. Choose a color and look out the window. Try to find five objects that have the color. Now switch colors. Go for the hard ones – chartreuse, magenta, and teal. Look at the different shades of green and make up names for them.

Letters and Numbers Hunt. Look for signs and billboards that have letters of the alphabet or numbers. Start with A and 1. How far down the alphabet can you get? What’s the highest number?

Song Game. Pick a word and find out how many songs you know with the word in it. "Love" can keep you going for hours, but how about "dog?"

Develop Problem-Solving Skills

Here are seven steps to problem-solving:

  1. Listen to each side in turn.
  2. Have each side state the other’s point of view.
  3. State the areas of agreement and disagreement
  4. State the problem.
  5. Brainstorm for solutions
  6. Evaluate the solutions in terms of consequences and producing a win-win solution.
  7. Selection one solution.
